Material Requirements

Vermont Life is printed on high-speed web offset, and U.S. web coated (SWOP) standards apply. It is saddle-wire bound. Trim size is 8-3/16" x 10-7/8". Bleed size is 8-5/16" x 11-1/8". Live material must be kept 3/8” from the trim. We adhere strictly to the dimensions listed here; we do not run inaccurately sized advertisements and resizing an ad will incur a production charge.

Digital File Submission Guidelines

First-time users PLEASE CALL the Vermont Life production department before submitting files.

  1. Ads should be created in InDesign up to CS4, QuarkXPress up to 7, Illustrator up to CS4, or Photoshop up to CS4 (Publisher and Word files cannot be accepted). Ads should be saved in the native format and labeled with the platform (Mac or PC), program, version and advertiser’s name. Postscript fonts for both screen and printer (open-type fonts preferred), as well as reference files for artwork used in the ads, should also accompany each file. Please do not use font styles. Fonts can be converted to outlines within some graphics programs.
  2. Color ads should have all spot color converted to process color.
  3. Digital images should be 300 dpi and sized appropriately (100%). Line art scans should be 1200 dpi.
  4. PDF files are preferred, but must be PDF X1A compliant and must be accompanied by native files. Transparencies must be flattened in the PDF format. For PDFs, use the settings “PDF X1A” or “Press Quality.” Files may also be furnished as EPS or TIFF.
    Do not furnish DCS files.
  5. Files should be sent as e-mail attachments to david.goodman@state.vt.us and judy.thurlow@state.vt.us. Be sure to include the advertiser’s name in the file name and the subject line of the e-mail so that we can identify the ad. If the ad is provided with native files only, please include a JPG or low-res PDF proof of the ad.
  6. Ads can also be furnished on CD or DVD. Any ad submitted with native files only must be accompanied by a proof. Send only
    copied files, not original files. Ad materials will be returned after publication, if requested. Self-addressed stamped envelopes
    are appreciated. No material will be kept beyond one year. Ship all ad materials to Vermont Life Production Dept., 6 Baldwin St., Montpelier, VT 05602.

Production Charges

Production charges will be assessed for ads that are (a) created from raw copy; (b) require changes; (c) require scans of photos or
slides (photos must be of good quality); (d) submitted in incompatible formats that need to be re-created; (e) incorrectly sized that
must be re-sized. Vermont Life will provide proofs of all ads that require production and allow one round of corrections at no charge.
Advertiser’s alterations beyond a second proof will be billed at $60/hour. Vermont Life will provide confirming proofs of all print-
ready ads. Advertiser’s alterations to this proof will be billed at $60/hour.

    • 1/8 or 1/12 page: $40.00

    • $60.00/hour (advertiser’s alterations, custom artwork, re-sizing, reproducing ads)
