General Information

Vermont Life's pages are produced using Macintosh computer generated electronic files which are output to high resolution offset printing plates. Ads submitted as computer generated electronic files are encouraged, as they yield higher quality reproduction and contribute to a more efficient workflow. No production charges will be incurred provided the guidelines below are followed.

Vermont Life is printed on high-speed web offset, and U.S. web coated (SWOP) standards apply. It is saddlewire bound. Trim size is 8-3/16" x 10-7/8". Bleed size is 8-5/16" x 11-1/8". Live material must be kept 3/8" from the trim. We adhere strictly to the dimensions listed here; we do not run inaccurately sized advertisements and re-sizing an ad will incur a production charge.

Computer-Generated Digital File Guidelines

(First-time users MUST CALL Production Department before submitting files.)

a. The advertisement is to be created in QuarkXPress up to 7, Page Maker up to 7, Indesign CS2, Illustrator up to CS2, or Photoshop up to CS2. It should be saved in the native format and labeled with the platform (Mac or PC), program, version, and advertiser's name. Postscript fonts for both screen and printer, as well as reference files for artwork used in the ad should also accompany each file. Please do not use font styles. Fonts can be converted to outlines within some graphics programs.

b. Color ads must have all spot color converted to process color.

c. Digital images must be 300dpi, and sized appropriately (100%). Line art scans should be 1200 dpi.

d. PDF files are preferred but must be PDF X1A compliant and must be accompanied by native files. Transparencies must be flattened in the PDF format. For PDFs, use the settings, "PDF X1A" or "Press Quality". Files may also be furnished as EPS or TIFF. Do not furnish DCS files.

e. Files can be sent as e-mail attachments to: David.Goodman@state.vt.us Be sure to include the advertiser's name in the file name and the subject line of the e-mail so that we can identify the ad. If the ad is provided with native files only, please include a JPG or low-res PDF proof of the ad, or send a proof to Vermont Life via fax or mail.

f. Ads can also be furnished on CD or DVD. Any ad submitted with native files only must be accompanied by a proof. Send only copied files, not original files.

g. Ad materials will be returned after publication, if requested. Self-addressed envelopes are appreciated! No material will be kept beyond one year.

PRODUCTION CHARGES

Production charges will be assessed for:

Ads that are created from raw copy;
Ads that require changes;
Ads that require scans of photos or slides. (Photos must be of good quality.)
Ads that are submitted in incompatible formats that need to be re-created;
Ads that are incorrectly sized that must be re-sized;
VL will provide proofs of all ads that require production with one round of corrections at no charge. Advertiser's alterations beyond a second proof will be billed at $60/hour.
VL will provide confirming proofs of all print ready ads. Advertiser's alterations to this proof will be billed at $60/hour.
